“War is Hell”
General Sherman, who knew more than a little about the value of shock and awe in waging war, was absolutely correct in declaring, “War is hell, and there is nothing you can do to refine it.” Of course, Sherman was thinking mainly about the fiery hell that the elderly, the sick, the pregnant women, the children whose fathers were away at war, or already wounded or dead, were about to find themselves in as he burned Atlanta to the ground – just as he had pillaged, ravished and slaughtered all the way there.
